The Associate Provost for Graduate and Professional Education and Dean of the Graduate College is the chief academic, executive, and fiscal officer for the Graduate College and reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost. The associate provost and dean develops, promotes, and coordinates programs, policies, and practices that support graduate and professional student education at the University of Iowa. They also represent the provost on relevant university and state committees and perform other duties as assigned by the provost.  

In addition, the associate provost and dean exercises functional and administrative supervision over the departments and programs in the Graduate College and provides leadership and oversight for the strategic, academic, intellectual, and administrative affairs of the college. 

The associate provost and dean oversees the following departments and programs:

  • Applied Mathematical and Computational Sciences Program
  • Center for the Book
  • Genetics Program
  • Human Toxicology Program
  • Immunology Program
  • Informatics Program
  • International Writing Program
  • Molecular Medicine Program
  • Neuroscience Program
  • School of Library and Information Science
  • School of Planning and Public Affairs
  • University of Iowa Press

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for the university’s graduate and professional educational mission to enhance student success and to increase retention and graduation rates.
  • Provide sustainable resources, leadership and oversight for the Graduate College’s departments and programs to recruit, develop, engage, and retain high-quality and diverse faculty, staff, and students.
  • Oversee and enhance the administration of the Graduate College’s resources.
  • Collaborate with deans, DEOs, and graduate and professional directors to develop and employ strategies to increase graduate and professional student graduate and retention rates and enhance student success.
  • Collaborate with the UI Center for Advancement to develop and implement external fundraising in support of the Graduate College’s departments and programs as well as support for graduate and professional programs campus-wide.
  • Collaborate with the Office of the Vice President for Research to promote the full participation of graduate and professional students and post-doctoral scholars in the research enterprise. 
  • Promote a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration, and respect, building a sense of community among faculty, staff, and students.
  • Oversee the review of the Graduate College’s faculty and staff, including making promotion and tenure decisions.
  • Oversee the review of departments and programs to ensure ongoing quality. 
  • Provide educational leadership and vision for academic programs that are innovative, cost-effective, and consistent with high standards while working to maintain appropriate accreditation of these programs and serving as liaison to collegiate and program accrediting bodies.
  • Interface with graduate and professional students and postdoctoral scholars to support and enhance educational training opportunities across campus.

Qualifications

The ideal qualifications and qualities for the next associate provost for graduate and professional education and dean of the Graduate College are as follows:

Required Qualifications:

  • Tenured, full professor at the University of Iowa; terminal degree in an academic or professional discipline
  • Successful experience and leadership in graduate and/or professional education
  • A record of dynamic, innovative, and visionary academic leadership experience, including significant and progressive administrative experiences
  • Administrative, fiscal, and operations management experience with an understanding of university finances
  • Knowledge of university system and/or higher education policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Experience working with high-level collegiate and central administrators
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated professional integrity and high degree of judgment, diplomacy, and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated experience advancing a welcoming and respectful environment

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of accreditation processes
  • Strong record of support for staff and faculty development and a proven track record of leadership in developing and implementing teaching, scholarship, and service activities that enhance the quality of graduate education and research
  • Demonstrated ability to serve faculty, staff, students and other constituencies in all disciplines in a manner that inspires reciprocal respect
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting and maintaining a strong culture of collaboration across disciplinary areas
  • Ability to articulate a compelling vision for the college, its component units, and graduate education in general to external audiences

Application Process

The associate provost for graduate and professional education and dean of the Graduate College position is an "at will" appointment. This is a 100% appointment beginning July 1, 2025 and continuing through June 30, 2030 with a review for possible reappointment conducted in the year prior to contract expiration.
